October 31st is right around the corner, however for all you Halloween freaks like me, technically the whole month of October is free game for ghoulish holiday decor. Holidays are a fun time to express your style in a playful theme driven way, but there are right and oh so wrong ways to display this playful side. Keeping it modern, stylish and modhemian approved is easy if you follow a few key rules.
Limit the color palette to organic hues found in nature, maybe none found in LA in October, but ya know, other places in the country that have changing seasons. Think straw, brown, burgundy, light creamy greens, black, white and pops of rich orange and metallic. Drape surfaces in gauze, velvet, burlap and linen. Punchy colors like purple grape and slim green and all the other new age characters are fun for the kiddos but if you’re trying to keep it clean and classy, steer clear of the kitch.
With this being said also, keep the accessories classic. Painted and carved pumpkins and gourds are always a classic, realistic skeletons, white sheeted ghosts, like the ones you drew in preschool, black crows, spiders and bats, bouquets of dried flowers and branches, metallic painted skulls, gold candlesticks with black candles, LOTS of candles, and draped antique cheese cloth, all very chic, understated and halloweeny without being too creepy, or worse yet, cheap and cheesy.

For all of you that don't care for Halloween as much, have a little sense of humor and keep it really simple as to not get in the way of the every day motions while still maintaining a livable autumnal space that you can stomach for the entire month of Halloween, I mean October.
