Show Me The Light/Boho Chic Lighting

Through the years of building homey environments, I've grown to realize the importance lighting has on a space. Dark rooms, although cozy and appropriate when you want to sleep off a hang over or jet lag, not so inviting in the regular day to day. The only reason for a total black out room other than nightshift at the hospital or I'm dying from the flu, would be, "I love video games more that reality" or "I like to watch porn in the comfort of my own cave, thank you very much"! Both really not socially appropriate and definitely not the kind of people you want to spend Friday night cocktail hour with.

When designing a space for a client I always give more than ample lighting options, with hopes that they will go for atleast 70% of my recommendations. At first they usually think its over kill but really in the end they see the light....yes, I meant that pun because yes, I'm corny.

Chandeliers, pendants or recessed is usually my first shot at introducing controlled lighting, mainly because it's what people most expect and its great bang for your buck, so it's not hard to talk them into. I love how they create great vertical interest with their structural and sculptural forms as well spread massive warmth through a space. From there I will work my way down the walls of a space, scattering light sources through sconces and table lamps of varying scales and eventually to the floor with unique stand alone pieces. Lighting really helps to define a space, highlights designated areas of the home as well as gives great levels and layers of glow. AND with so many glorious lighting options out there, its truly impossible to exclude.

Here are some particular pieces that Im really digging right now, that I've found fit with most personalities and functionalities and that won't break the bank and that totally scream modern bohemian chic interiors.

My girl Natalie Myers killing this dining area with that over the table piece as well as those bomb sconces over the fire place! Simple, clean, modern and totally rad.

Ginny MacDonald showing us how to rock a reading nook. Love the rejuvenation lamp on the shelf! Perfect placement for not only a warm glow but also for sculptural shelfie vibes.

Obsessed doesn't even start me on this lamp. With cashmere, linen, cotton or hemp options, these hand made lanterns had me at hello. Lost and Found has dope ones for a great price surprisingly.

As always Jenni Kayne slays. Her Los Angeles Living Room makeover has me like bow down betch!

KAITRINS STYLING

TIPS

#1

Before you even bring anything into a space, nail down the feeling and function you want to convey with said space. Build off that feeling through color, texture, pattern, form and funk.

#2

Make sure to designate and define each living area, no matter the square footage. Create conversation, reading, lounging and eating areas that will naturally lure people to the appropriate space by the power of furniture layout, lighting and styling.

#3

Dont forget to add touches of YOU throughout. Its your home, not a catalogue, showroom or photoshoot, so personalize with accessories, art and lighting that speaks to you and works in your day to day life.
