Bookcase Styling/Shelfie Magic

The quickest, least expensive and most dramatic way to transform your living space is to restyle your open shelving. Forget spending money on new tchotchkes, all you need is to take a look at what you already have and regroup, declutter and color coordinate. A lot of the time, the biggest transformations in styling your space comes from taking things away, not accumulating more. Shocker, I know! I love trinkets, melted candles, pretty books, lamps and weird flea market statues just as much as the next girl, but sometimes honing your style comes by scaling back and reorganizing and categorizing. Pick a few that speak to you and your style, and the others, maybe find another home for. Choose a color palette or over feel you want to convey in the space and work out from there.

Stacking books is always a good choice. Staging them page side out or taking off their paper covers, is a nice little trick to keeping things calm and neutral. On the contrary, you can always embrace the crazy colored bindings and clump them by hue or theme. Lay them horizontal in groups of 3 or 5 and top with a plant or candle, flank vertical stacks with unique books ends, add a little lamp for form and function, metal candle sticks, handmade pottery or a pretty wooden bowl filled with organic colored beads and you have a proper display of your cherished collectables. Pretty trays are great for layering too, either to add height to an object or for some much needed metal, marble or stone accents. Think layers, textures and color!

Did I mention plants! Oh man, never leave out our plant friends. A pop of green is always welcomed. Plants encompass everything I love about accessories. They add texture, movement, color, height and sculptural art all in one little pretty pot. Annnnd they are basically the first step towards exercising responsibility and fostering one dimensional relationships, which for those of you afraid of becoming an adult, is really beneficial.

Accentuate the depth of your shelves, giving your shelfie some dimension. The best way to do this is to place flatter, taller pieces, like framed photos, paintings, decorative pottery or woven baskets, towards the far back of the shelf, layering smaller, shorter trinkets up front.

KAITRINS STYLING

TIPS

#1

Before you even bring anything into a space, nail down the feeling and function you want to convey with said space. Build off that feeling through color, texture, pattern, form and funk.

#2

Make sure to designate and define each living area, no matter the square footage. Create conversation, reading, lounging and eating areas that will naturally lure people to the appropriate space by the power of furniture layout, lighting and styling.

#3

Dont forget to add touches of YOU throughout. Its your home, not a catalogue, showroom or photoshoot, so personalize with accessories, art and lighting that speaks to you and works in your day to day life.
