Velvet Crush

I have always been slightly velvet obsessed, which makes me completely ecstatic that it is so on trend right now. Velvet for fall is everywhere, in both fashion and interiors, and I couldn't be more supportive.

Velvet is total luxury, and not just in a pirate, elizabethan era kind of way. It's soft, thick, and totally luscious. It can be heavy or slinky, shiny or matte, but be careful, it can also be cheap and cheesy. Velvet made entirely from silk is rare and usually has market prices of several hundred dollars per yard. Cotton is also used to make velvet, though this often results in a less luxurious fabric. Velvet can also be made from fibers such as linen, mohair, and wool but if you ever read polyester on the label, run away, because you are a fire hazard. Don't skimp on your textiles and you'll have a totally clean, timeless, eclectic style that mimics some sort of critter found in the wild, which is perhaps why I love it so much.

Velvet is unique because it's color transforms in different lights. Ripples and wrinkles create highlights and shadows that give velvet such amazing dimension. I'll take it crushed, tufted, pleated or flat. A little pop of velvet adds a level of texture and softness that takes every lounge zone to the next level. Add a little to your repetoir with a simple velvet pillow, see how it feels. If you're picking up what I'm throwing down, soon you'll be add an ottoman or vintage velvet arm chair to the mix. Leave you alone too long and mohair will slowly creep into your bedroom, enveloping your headboard or bedding. Then you'll be taking it to the streets in a velvet power suit or a slinky silk velvet dress. You can't be stopped and it's OK because velvet is where it's at this season!

TIPS

#1

Before you even bring anything into a space, nail down the feeling and function you want to convey with said space. Build off that feeling through color, texture, pattern, form and funk.

#2

Make sure to designate and define each living area, no matter the square footage. Create conversation, reading, lounging and eating areas that will naturally lure people to the appropriate space by the power of furniture layout, lighting and styling.

#3

Dont forget to add touches of YOU throughout. Its your home, not a catalogue, showroom or photoshoot, so personalize with accessories, art and lighting that speaks to you and works in your day to day life.
